When I first started working with the local directories (I’m talking about places like Google Places, the Yahoo Local Directory, Citysearch, etc.) I paid close attention to the businesses that were at the top. I started to notice patterns and I quickly learned how to duplicate them for my clients.

If you take a quick look at the Google local directory, you’ll see that the businesses with the most reviews are almost always at the top. Of course there are other factors, and I go into those too, but having reviews is really, really important.
